“On Saturday, July 30th, at approximately 9:07 PM, PSPD responded to the intersection of East Palm Canyon Drive and Sunrise Way regarding a fatal traffic collision involving four vehicles. Based on the preliminary investigation it appears that a vehicle which was traveling South on Sunrise Way, rear-ended a vehicle that was stopped at the intersection of E. Palm Canyon Drive. The impact caused a chain-reaction collision with two other vehicles stopped at the intersection.
The driver of the vehicle that was rear-ended was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger from that vehicle sustained significant injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the vehicle that caused the collision was identified as Kevin Atteberry (57 of Los Angeles). Atteberry sustained significant injuries and was transported to a local area hospital for treatment.
The PSPD Traffic Division responded to the scene to assume the investigation. The unit determined Atteberry was in violation of driving under the influence. Additionally, the unit followed-up on information linking Atteberry’s vehicle to a hit and run collision at the intersection of Ramon Road and Sunrise Way, just prior to the fatal collision.
Atteberry will be charged will multiple DUI related violations, including murder based on a prior DUI conviction. Once released from the hospital Atteberry will be taken into custody and booked.”
