WALNUT CREEK — Two men face charges including assault with a deadly weapon during a botched robbery of a Rolex watch. This attempted armed robbery occurred at the Ygnacio Plaza shopping center.
Richmond residents, 34-year-old Shaune Rogers and 33-year-old David Lopez have been jailed since August 11. They were arrested by Walnut Creek police with assistance from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.
Both were taken into custody at 4:25 p.m., about a half hour after Walnut Creek police responded to a 911 call. The caller reported seeing the victim bleeding, lying on the ground at the shopping center parking lot.
Two masked men reportedly struck the victim with handguns on the head, before fleeing in a black sedan. The suspects’ getaway car crashed soon afterward on Bancroft Road, near La Corso Circle.
The suspects abandoned the car and fled on foot into a residential neighborhood, jumping over fences. With assistance from witnesses and a sheriff’s department helicopter overhead, both men were detained on Ready Road.
They were quickly arrested. Rogers is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $1 million bond. Lopez remains behind bars at the West County Detention Facility in lieu of $940,000 bond.
Rogers and Lopez are charged with attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit crime. Both are also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
In addition, Rogers is also charged with hit-and-run. They are scheduled to appear in court on August 26.
