SAN LEANDRO — A man faces 12 charges after allegedly shooting at San Leandro officers who were responding to an attempted armed robbery. The suspect is a convicted felon with 19 prior arrests.
Carlos B. Onate, a 39-year-old homeless man from Oakland, is being held at Santa Rita Jail. Ornate was arrested September 27 at 6:27 p.m. He was apprehended near 3630 High Street in Oakland by San Leandro detectives, with help from Oakland police.
Ornate is accused of the attempted robbery at a 7-Eleven convenience store at 333 East 14th Street. San Leandro officers responded September 26 at 3:45 a.m., but the suspect fled without robbing anyone.
Two victims reported that a man brandished a firearm and threatened them. While officers were speaking with the victims, the suspect was spotted across the street. Officers tried to detain the suspect who was armed with a handgun, but he ran away. After running about two blocks, one shot was fired at pursuing officers. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Officers caught up with the suspect on the 100 block of Durant Avenue, whereupon the suspect threatened to shoot himself. Officers de-escalated that situation, but the suspect ran away after lowering the firearm.
Officers set up a perimeter in the area, but the suspect eluded them. However, officers did find a handgun allegedly ditched by the suspect on the 100 block of East 14th Street.
After reviewing surveillance video from the store, San Leandro detectives concluded Ornate is the person who shot at officers. He was later found on High Street in Oakland, near Interstate 580.
Ornate is charged with assault with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, among other offenses.
