BERKELEY — Two parents were arrested while driving through Berkeley with their six children all under 12 years of age. Police searched their SUV and confiscated drugs and a loaded handgun and ammunition. This happened during a traffic stop in the predawn hours of November 5.
The family was driving through South Berkeley when they were detained shortly before 4:30 a.m. They were stopped near Ashby BART train station at Ashby Avenue and Adeline Street, not far from Oakland city limits.
Officers first contacted the driver, 32-year-old Jasmine Glasper who lives in Antioch. While speaking with her, the officer saw drug paraphernalia tucked inside a dashboard cubbyhole. The children’s father Victor T. Malaki, 28, was sitting in the passenger seat. Malaki lists his address in Seattle. All six children were sitting in the backseat.
When officers searched the couple, they found suspected methamphetamine inside Malaki’s pocket. On the floor in front of him, police found a loaded handgun with no identification serial number, and ammunition. Tucked inside the sun visor, police found more suspected methamphetamine.
Glasper and Malaki were arrested, and their children taken to Alameda County Child Protective Services. Their oldest child is 11 years-old and the youngest child is a one-year-old.
Both parents face charges for child abuse and possession of a controlled substance with a firearm. They also face charges for carrying a concealed loaded firearm, and other weapons- related charges. Incidentally, Malaki was arrested in October by Antioch police on suspicion of burglary.
