Man Free on Bail Arrested after Allegedly Being Caught with Stolen Checks
A Mendocino County man was recently arrested for alleged possession of stolen checks and other items, according to a press release by the Sheriff’s Office.
On the night of November 29th, patrol deputies on the 100 block of Kawi Place in Willits reportedly witnessed 35-year-old Carlos Ogawa — whom they recognized from prior contacts — exiting a vehicle, along with another occupant.
Knowing that Ogawa was currently free on bond and subject to search, deputies did exactly that.
Deputies searched Ogawa and his vehicle, and in his vehicle reportedly found a checkbook belonging to a woman in Ukiah. Some of the checks appeared to have been altered with Ogawa’s name on the “Pay to” line.
Deputies also located other items that appeared to have been stolen from elsewhere in the county. The owner of the checks also confirmed they were hers and that Ogawa did not have permission to have them, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Following an interview, Ogawa was ultimately arrested on suspicion of felony forgery, felony possession of blank checks, misdemeanor possession of stolen property, and committing a felony offense while free on bond.
