A southern California man has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

In a media release posted to Facebook yesterday, Irvine police identified 24-year-old Larry Molina as the man suspected of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl along the Peters Canyon Trail this past Monday, January 2.

Officers had responded to the area, located near Irvine Boulevard and the SR-161 toll road, around 6 PM to investigate a report of a sexual assault involving a juvenile. The victim reported that she had walked past the suspect along the hiking path and, when she passed him, he allegedly grabbed her and sexually assaulted her.

The victim was able to fight him off and run to a nearby residence to call for help, police said.

Officers soon identified Molina as the primary suspect using evidence collected at the scene, though the media release did not specify further. Molina was arrested at his home the next morning, January 3, at which time investigators reportedly discovered additional evidence connecting him to the crime.

Molina was booked at the Orange County jail on suspicion of sexual assault of a victim under the age of 16. The Orange County Register reports that his bail has been set at $1 million.
