“On Wednesday, July 27th, 2022, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office responded to Berry Lumber in Sacramento, for the report of multiple fraudulent lumber purchases of approximately $8000. Deputies were provided with video surveillance which captured the incident. The case was investigated by detectives assigned to the Centralized Investigations Division Property Crimes Bureau. During the investigation, it was determined that both Berry Lumber and Berco Redwood Inc. / Berry Lumber Inc. sustained additional losses at other locations. Detectives identified James Eugene SMITH (41), as one of the suspects involved in the original case.
“On Wednesday, January 25, 2023, detectives executed an arrest warrant for SMITH at his residence in Discovery Bay. SMITH was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for grand theft and unlawful use of personal identifying information. He posted bond and was released from custody hours later.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate similar instances at local businesses within the county that SMITH may have defrauded.
