Westminster Man Sentenced after Pleading Guilty to Felony Grand Theft, Insurance Fraud
Robert Meseer (69) of Westminster has reportedly been sentenced to three years of supervised formal probation and ordered to pay $92,140 plus ten percent interest after pleading guilty to fifty-five felony counts of grand theft, insurance fraud, and forgery.
Meseer has already made a payment of $65,000 in restitution to the victims.
According to a media release by the California Department of Insurance, in 2016, a DOI investigation revealed Meseer’s illegal activities as an insurance agent.
Meseer had allegedly stolen more than $140,000 from several business owners, and had been illegally running an insurance entity called MRM Insurance after a relative’s license expired in 2009, giving him access to client files.
The investigation was initiated upon a referral from a business owner who discovered Meseer had issued a fake insurance certificate, listing a non-existent insurance company, the DOI said.
The Department’s investigation uncovered multiple violations committed by Meseer, such as issuing false insurance documents, overcharging policyholders, hiding the true cost of coverage, renewing policies without passing on the premium payments, and even soliciting new insurance business without a proper license.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case.
Meseer’s illegal activities serve as a reminder of the importance of verifying the credentials of insurance agents and being vigilant in ensuring the authenticity of insurance certificates.
