On February 9, 2023, Angel Saavedra Barraza (32) of Merced was arrested in connection with the murder of Aaron Albert Jimenez, police said in a press release.
The arrest was carried out by detectives during the execution of a search warrant in Newman.
The alleged crime took place on December 11, 2022. Police had received a report of a gunshot victim at a residence on the 3300 block of Olympia Court in Merced. Responding officers found Jimenez, who had been shot in the chest, and ultimately pronounced him deceased at the scene despite lifesaving efforts.
An investigation revealed that Jimenez had been shot at close range with an air rifle, allegedly by Barraza, a few blocks away from where he died. Barraza fled from the area in a vehicle, police said.
The Merced Police Department recorded six murders in 2022, all of which have since led to arrests.
