Riverside, CA – A Riverside apartment complex shooting from March 6th, 2022, led to the death of a 24-year-old man, Benjamin Chanes. At the time of the shooting, Chanes and his girlfriend were driving when they were approached by four suspects at gunpoint. The suspects kidnapped them and forced them to return to their apartment where they were robbed. During the home invasion robbery, one of the suspects shot at Chanes, striking and killing him. His girlfriend was unharmed.
Detectives from the Robbery-Homicide Unit and Forensics Unit took over the investigation with assistance from the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office and Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. Over several months, detectives followed up on leads and reviewed surveillance video, eventually identifying all four suspects involved.
Two suspects were arrested in September 2022. Anthony Wright, 30, of Indio, CA, was transferred and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on robbery and kidnapping charges from an investigation conducted by the Rialto Police Department. Qevon Xavier Harvey, 25, of Desert Hot Springs, was arrested by the METRO Team in the desert area and booked into the John Benoit Detention Center.
In February 2023, detectives located and arrested the remaining two suspects. Trezell Lamone Heckard, 28, of Vallejo, CA, was arrested in Contra Costa County and transferred to the Robert Presley Detention Center. Kahlin Cynque Erwin, 28, of Pittsburg, CA, was located and arrested in Carson County, Texas, then extradited to California and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center.
All four suspects were charged with murder, kidnapping, carjacking, and home invasion robbery. Wright and Harvey are being held without bail, while Heckard and Erwin are being held on 1 million dollars’ bail.
