Banning, CA – A man previously arrested by the Banning Police has been arrested again on new sexual assault charges following a call to the department’s Detective Bureau.
On March 29, 2022, a female called the department after seeing a press release about the arrest of Steven Roy McElroy in a previous case. She reported that she and another female had been sexually assaulted by McElroy in his Grand Terrace home on separate occasions between 2015 and 2016.
Both victims provided information to detectives at the Banning Police Department, leading to the initiation of a criminal investigation. Following consultation with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, an arrest warrant was issued for McElroy on the new charges.
On March 14, 2023, McElroy was arrested in front of the Banning Justice Center as he prepared to appear at a preliminary hearing for the original case. He was booked on the new warrant, and the Banning Police Department Detective Bureau is asking anyone with information about this or any other case to come forward.
McElroy has been charged with two counts of rape under California Penal Code sections 261(a)(1) and 261(a)(2). The charges relate to the rape of a victim incapable of consent and rape by force or fear.
The Banning Police Department encourages anyone with information about this case or any other case to contact them at (951) 922-3170. The case number for this new charge against McElroy is Banning Police Case #22-648.
