Tulare County Man Arrested for Allegedly Shooting Dog with Arrow

A man has been arrested in Orosi on suspicion of animal cruelty after he was found with a bow and arrow while allegedly fleeing the scene where a dog had been shot.

According to a press release by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, detectives from the TAGNET unit were in the area of Avenue 412 and Road 130 on the evening of Friday, April 7, when they heard a dog yelping and running down the street.

Authorities quickly found the dog with an arrow penetrating its torso and took it into the custody of Tulare County Animal Control, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Detectives then found the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Lance Canales, running away with a bow and arrow.

Canales reportedly attempted to resist arrest but was ultimately taken into custody. Investigators say Canales admitted to shooting the dog, and has been booked into the Adult Pretrial Facility on suspicion of resisting arrest and felony animal cruelty charges.

The dog is expected to survive its injuries.
