Arrests of two men responsible for a late night armed robbery of a Camarillo sports bar patron have been some three weeks after the potentially deadly encounter.
According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Francisco Jauregui, it was approaching “last call” at a Camarillo sports bar and eatery on March 20th, when two suspects confrontationally approached a male patron and “demanded the victim’s property.” To support their demand, one of the suspects reportedly “brandished a firearm” while the other “implied having a stabbing instrument.”
After turning over his cash, the victim escaped and “fled the area.” Minutes later, the victim alerted Camarillo Police Department 911 Emergency Dispatch to report the crime.
At that point, the Camarillo Special Enforcement Unit and Special Crimes Units joined the case in collaboration with the VCSD Major Crimes Bureau as the investigation commenced in earnest.
Within days, 33 year-old Khalid Malik and 45-year-old David Mora, both residents of Camarillo, were identified as the suspects. In spite of the concerted efforts of the aforementioned law enforcement entities, it took nearly three weeks for detectives to run Mora and Malik to ground.
But on April 13 th , with search warrants in hand, detectives made contact with Mora “in his vehicle” and subsequently conducted a search of his residence. That search turned up “evidence linking him to the robbery,” as well as a wide range of narcotics and controlled substances indicating Mora’s active involvement in drug sales. He was transported to Ventura County Jail where he was booked on a range of drug charges as well as a charge of armed robbery, with his bail set at $150,000.
That same day, detectives served a search warrant on Malik’s residence and found him to be in possession of evidence of the March 20 th robbery as well as an unregistered “ghost gun.” He was transported to Ventura County Jail, booked on various weapons charges and on a charge of armed robbery, with his bail set at $65,000.
