NOVATO — A probationer has been arrested by Marin County Sheriff’s Office deputies for allegedly stealing mail. Shelby L. Wilcox, 29, of Rohnert Park, attracted attention with an expired/suspended vehicle registration.
Deputies investigated an unregistered vehicle on the morning of April 18. The vehicle was east of Highway 101 on rural Binford Road. The area is well known for attracting people living in parked cars and motor homes.
An identification check revealed that Shelby the driver is on supervised probation and subject to searches. She has prior convictions for identity theft and financial crimes in Sonoma County.
A probation search turned up evidence of newly committed crimes. Deputies found mail, financial documents, bankcards, social security cards, and cans of pepper (tear) spray.
The mail believed to have been stolen belongs to residents of Marin and Sonoma counties. Most affected victims live in either Novato, Petaluma, or Rohnert Park.
Shelby was placed under arrest on suspicion of grand theft PC 485 and receiving stolen property PC 496(A). She was also arrested for being a felon in possession of tear gas and for driving an unregistered vehicle.
Shelby was transported to San Rafael and booked at Marin County Jail. She was later moved to Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility in Santa Rosa, where she remains in custody.
Shelby has been in regular contact with law enforcement since 2016. She has prior arrests for burglary, forgery, grand theft, possession of a controlled substance, and prostitution, among other offenses.
