One Arrested, Another Sought in Colma Theft Incident that Left Suspect and Officers Injured
San Mateo County authorities have arrested one suspect and are seeking a second in connection to a theft incident that resulted in injury to a local police officer.
According to a press release by the Colma Police Department, officers responded on the evening of May 1 to a call reporting a theft in progress on the 1200 block of El Camino Real. Upon arrival, officers were informed that one male suspect had concealed merchandise inside the store and was now leaving with the unpaid items. Another man was reportedly waiting in a vehicle outside.
As officers attempted to apprehend the theft suspect, he fled the scene, and the driver of the vehicle attempted to intervene by driving towards the officers. The driver allegedly turned his vehicle towards one of the officers, striking both the officer and the fleeing suspect and almost pinning the officer against a wall. This resulted in serious injuries to both the officer and the suspect. A second officer attempted to prevent the driver from fleeing and was also injured in the process, police said.
The driver fled the scene and is currently outstanding. The vehicle they were driving has been described as a white Subaru Forester.
The theft suspect, identified as a 29-year-old resident of Turlock, was transported to a local hospital for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The injured officers were also taken to a local hospital for treatment and have since been released.
The Colma Police Department is still investigating the incident, and they are encouraging anyone with information to contact the Detective Bureau at (650) 997-8321. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the anonymous tip-line at (650) 997-8337.
As the investigation continues, more information may be released in the coming days. The suspect currently in custody has not been publicly identified by name, and it was unclear at press time whether they had retained an attorney.
