SAN RAFAEL—A construction worker oftentimes in trouble with the law was arrested at Montecito Plaza shopping center. Video surveillance evidence implicates 41-year-old Edward G. Carroll in an attempted carjacking.
The victim was attacked violently May 8 moments after he stepped out of his parked car. Carroll allegedly approached the victim, demanded his keys, and immediately began punching him. The victim tried pushing away the attacker to no avail.
A violent struggle continued until a security guard from nearby Redwood Credit Union intervened. The guard stopped the assault. Next the suspect tried to run away, but the suspect tripped and fell.
Carroll got up and allegedly fought with the security guard, who eventually restrained and handcuffed him. San Rafael officers in the vicinity arrived on the scene and placed Carroll under arrest at 4:48 p.m.
In a prepared statement San Rafael police said. “The security guard is to be commended for his swift and brave action. He intervened during a violent carjacking attempt and apprehended the suspect.”
The victim suffered minor injuries to his head and face, and he received first aid at the scene. Neither Carroll nor the heroic security guard were reported injured.
Carroll was booked into Marin County Jail, where he is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond. He faces open charges for attempted carjacking and robbery, pending a review of his bond on May 17.
A repeat offender with a criminal history, Carroll has been arrested 27 times since 2012. He has prior arrests for assault, battery, burglary, DUIs, forgery, street terrorism, vandalism, and vehicle theft.
