WATSONVILLE, CA – A routine traffic stop for a vehicle code violation took a surprising turn when Watsonville Police officers discovered two unregistered guns, high-capacity magazines, and ammunition. The incident occurred on Tuesday in the vicinity of Freedom Boulevard and Alta Vista Avenue.
Officers on patrol pulled over a vehicle driven by Cierra Rodriguez, 23, due to a loud car exhaust. The situation escalated when officers learned that two passengers in the car were on probation. Acting within their legal authority, the officers conducted a probation search.
During the search, law enforcement officials unearthed two loaded firearms concealed within separate backpacks. Additionally, they discovered high-capacity magazines and ammunition neatly packed inside a plastic bag. The discovery immediately raised concerns about public safety and the potential for criminal activity.
Cierra Rodriguez, the driver of the vehicle, was taken into custody on charges related to the possession of firearms and child endangerment. Disturbingly, there was a two-year-old child present in the backseat of the car, heightening the gravity of the situation. Alongside Rodriguez, David Maciel, 19, a convicted felon, was also apprehended and subsequently booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on firearm-related charges.
One of the passengers, a 17-year-old individual who was already on active probation, was arrested for firearm offenses as well. The juvenile suspect was promptly transported to a juvenile hall to await further legal proceedings.
In the interest of the child’s welfare, officers released the two-year-old into the custody of a family member, providing a measure of relief amid an otherwise distressing incident.
