Golden Gate CHP Investigating Suspected Road Rage Incident Along I-580
The California Highway Patrol has announced an investigation into a two-vehicle crash and shooting along westbound I-580, which they suspect to be an incident of road rage.
According to a press release by the California Highway Patrol’s Golden Gate Division, a two-vehicle crash occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, May 25, on westbound I-580 near Keller Avenue, involving a gray Dodge Ram and an overturned Ford Escape. An officer from the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Oakland Area Office responded to the scene where it was reported that a road rage incident had taken place.
According to initial reports, the driver and sole occupant of the gray Dodge Ram sustained minor injuries, while the driver of the overturned Ford Escape emerged unharmed from the crash. Officers investigating the scene were informed that the road rage incident involved the two vehicles and that one of the drivers allegedly discharged a firearm at the other vehicle. No occupants were struck by the discharged rounds, authorities said.
As a result of this information, law enforcement officers detained both the driver and passenger of the suspected vehicle. Detectives from the CHP’s Golden Gate Division Special Investigation Unit were notified and promptly arrived at the scene to assist in the ongoing investigation.
During the investigation, with the assistance of a K-9 unit from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were able to recover a firearm in close proximity to the crash scene. No further details regarding the firearm or its connection to the incident have been released at this time.
