The Fresno Police Department has announced the arrest of the primary suspect in the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman earlier this week.
Shortly before 11 PM on Tuesday, May 30, officers from the Southeast Policing District responded to a report of a gunshot victim at the intersection of Tyler Avenue and Bond Street. The victim, identified as 18-year-old Zoe Salinas, was found in the passenger seat of a vehicle with a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, Salinas was pronounced deceased.
Investigators soon identified the primary suspect in the shooting as 19-year-old Jose Gutierrez Contreras. Investigators determined that Salinas was in a dating relationship with Contreras. An argument ensued between Salinas and Contreras, resulting in Contreras allegedly shooting Salinas.
After the shooting, Contreras fled the scene and was apprehended by officers in a nearby residential neighborhood. He was found in possession of a semi-automatic handgun, police said.
Contreras has been arrested and will be booked into the Fresno County jail on suspicion of murder. This incident marks the first domestic violence-related murder in Fresno in 2023, police said.
