A driver was taken into custody by law enforcement officers after a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 80 that ended with the driver crashing into a ditch in Fairfield on the evening of June 5.
According to a press release by the Fairfield Police Department, the pursuit was initiated when an officer attempted to stop the vehicle on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 at the Travis off-ramp. The driver had allegedly been driving recklessly, almost causing two collisions.
After reportedly failing to yield, the suspect vehicle exited at Airbase Parkway and proceeded onto the on-ramp for westbound Interstate 80. However, the driver made a U-turn on the on-ramp and entered the landscaping area between the on-ramp and off-ramp. The vehicle then became stuck in a ditch after going down an embankment. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Francisco Bautista of Oxnard, then fled on foot.
Bautista reportedly ran across all lanes of westbound Interstate 80, climbed over the divider wall, and continued across all lanes of eastbound Interstate 80. He was subsequently apprehended by responding officers after climbing over a metal barrier and seeking refuge in the nearby bushes along the freeway.
Bautista has been booked on several charges, including reckless driving, in connection with the incident. It was unclear at press time whether Bautista had retained an attorney.
Law enforcement authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Fairfield Police Department.
