Man in Jail on Unrelated Warrant Identified as Homicide Suspect

The Fresno Police Department has opened an investigation and identified a primary suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred on the night of Saturday, May 27th, in the city’s Central Policing District.

According to a department press release, police officers discovered a gunshot victim, identified as 34-year-old Shavar Smith, on East Olive Avenue.

Smith had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was immediately transported to Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) in critical condition. On Wednesday, June 7, Smith passed away at CRMC due to his injuries.

Based on video surveillance obtained during the investigation, homicide detectives have identified the shooting suspect as 37-year-old Celestino Chavez. Chavez,  reportedly a validated gang member on post-release community supervision, was already in custody at the Fresno County jail for an outstanding felony warrant.

On Thursday, June 15, murder charges were added against Chavez, police said.

The Fresno Police Department is encouraging anyone with information regarding this case (case# 2305160085) to come forward and contact Homicide Detective Ben Barnes at 559-621-2421. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 498-STOP (7867).

The investigation into this shooting incident is ongoing, and authorities remain dedicated to seeking justice for the victim and their family. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
