Calaveras County Man Arrested After Allegedly Brandishing Knife, Assaulting Responding Officers
The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a man suspected of brandishing a knife and who allegedly assaulted two of the law enforcement officers who responded to the scene.
According to a press release by the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to an incident at Sierra Meadows Apartments on Longman Lane on the morning of Tuesday, July 4. Deputies were called to the scene after receiving reports of a suspect brandishing a knife and posing a direct threat to the safety of the residents.
Upon their arrival, deputies contacted the reporting party and victim. The alleged suspect, identified as 32-year-old Casey Martin, was reportedly already wanted on felony burglary charges stemming from a prior investigation conducted a week earlier.
Deputies attempted to make contact with Martin outside of his apartment, but Martin allegedly chose to ignore the deputies’ instructions and retreated into his residence. The deputies then followed him inside, where Martin reportedly barricaded himself in a room.
After around fifteen minutes, Martin decided to surrender peacefully and engaged in communication with the deputies, as well as an officer from the Angels Camp Police Department in the apartment hallway. During the arrest, however, Martin managed to escape from the apartment and allegedly assaulted one of the deputies and the assisting officer on the premises’ lawn area.
Deputies then made the decision to deploy a trained canine unit which apprehended Martin. As a result of the altercation, the suspect sustained injuries and was promptly transported to a local area hospital for medical treatment.
Both the deputy and the Angels Camp officer suffered injuries during the assault by Martin and were provided with medical care at a local area hospital. They were later released and are expected to make a full recovery.
Martin was booked into the Calaveras County jail on suspicion of assault with serious injury on a peace officer, obstructing or resisting an officer, brandishing a weapon, and aggravated mayhem, as well as charges related to the alleged burglary incident.
