In June 2023, VCFOCUS investigators received information regarding 31-year-old Ventura resident Jonathan Griggs’; involvement in the illicit distribution of fentanyl. Prompted by this intelligence, detectives initiated an inquiry into Griggs’ activities which indicated that Griggs, with an apparent proclivity for breaking every law on the books, has previous arrests and convictions involving assault with a deadly weapon and street terrorism, possession of a firearm as a felon and unlawfully transferring a firearm.
According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Robert Davidson, on June 29th, Griggs was out on bail on “prior firearms violations and was also on probation for a 2019 conviction on charges of driving under the influence of drugs.”
It was just after 2:00 p.m. on June 29th when investigators attached to the Ventura County Fentanyl Overdose and Crimes Units (VCFOCUS) spotted Griggs as a passenger in a vehicle. They promptly initiated a traffic stop and detained Griggs at the scene. A probation search was conducted on his person, the vehicle, and his place of residence, each of which led to the discovery of assorted contraband, including approximately 29 grams of powdered fentanyl, 43 Xanax pills, 110 Gabapentin pills, and $249.00 in U.S. currency.
Griggs was taken into custody and transported to Ventura County Jail where he was charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell and transportation of a controlled substance. During the booking process, it was discovered that Griggs had concealed a usable quantity of fentanyl on his person, leading to additional charges of bringing a controlled substance into a correctional facility and possessing a controlled substance while incarcerated. Griggs remains in custody with his bail set at $200,000.00.
