Authorities in San Rafael have announced the arrest of a primary suspect in a recent stabbing at a local apartment complex last week.
In a press release, San Rafael police identified Alexander Amaya-Rodriguez, 43, as the suspect. Amaya-Rodriguez was apprehended on July 8 in connection with a stabbing that occurred in a Canal Neighborhood apartment complex the previous day, July 7. The victim, a man walking his dog, sustained multiple stab wounds and was taken to a local hospital, where he is expected to recover.
Authorities responded to a 9-1-1 call on the evening of July 7, reporting the stabbing at an apartment complex on the 3400 block of Kerner Boulevard. Responding San Rafael police officers and Fire Department paramedics found the victim, who reportedly had sustained three stab wounds. According to the victim, an unidentified man approached him while he was walking his dog and attacked him without provocation.
Investigators interviewed witnesses, which reportedly led to the discovery of cellphone footage captured by an individual who’d had a previous encounter with the same suspect. The footage enabled an officer to positively identify the suspect as Amaya-Rodriguez. Authorities were not able to locate Amaya-Rodriguez that evening, police said.
The following morning, July 8, police received a call reporting that Amaya-Rodriguez had returned to the apartment complex and was knocking on doors. Officers responded to the scene and, this time, took Amaya-Rodriguez into custody. Amaya-Rodriguez was reportedly found to be in possession of the knife believed to have been used in the attack.
Police say that, during a subsequent interview, Amaya-Rodriguez admitted to the stabbing, and that he had no connection or prior knowledge of the victim. Authorities believe this to be an isolated incident.
Amaya-Rodriguez has been booked into Marin County jail on suspicion of attempted murder and felony assault with a deadly weapon, with bail set at $500,000. The victim is expected to make a full recovery.
Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the incident and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
