“Serial rapist, 33-year-old Christopher Sparpanic of Camptonville, was sentenced to 36 years in state prison by the Superior Court of California, County of Nevada on Monday, July 17. Sparpanic victimized several Nevada County women and was charged three counts of forcible rape, one count of forcible sodomy, one count of oral copulation by force, and one count of digital penetration by force.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) first learned of a possible serial rapist in the community in summer 2019 when two separate forcible rape investigations commenced. Neither victim knew their assailant but based on the witness descriptions and the context of each assault, it was believed to be the same offender.
“In the course of investigation, it was determined there were multiple victims of similar sexual assaults by a male matching the description of the original suspect,” explained Detective Josephine Strachan, Major Crimes Unit of NCSO, who headed the investigation. “In total, we discovered we had confirmed victims dating back to fall 2018.”
Due to the bravery of the victims and their detailed description of the assailant, paired with confirmed DNA analysis, the suspect was later identified as Sparpanic. Detective Strachan, with assistance from NCSO deputies, apprehended the suspect.
NCSO worked with the District Attorney’s Office and Deputy District Attorney, Helenaz Hill, to bring justice to all of the victims.
“The victims’ strength to come forward is the main reason Sparpanic will remain behind bars these next three-plus decades,” added Detective Strachan. “All of us at the NCSO and District Attorney’s Office are grateful for their help to protect others in the community.”
At the completion of his 36-year sentence, Sparpanic will be required to register as a sex offender (290) and will remain on parole 10 years.”
