Fresno police have announced the arrest of a primary suspect in connection with a recent fatal stabbing on East Griffith Way over the weekend.
In a press release, the Fresno Police Department identified 36-year-old Steven Raymundo as the man believed to be responsible for the fatal stabbing of Patricia Roper, 58.
Police had responded to a report of an injured person on the 1600 block of East Griffith Way on the evening of Sunday, July 23, and discovered Roper suffering from multiple stab wounds to her upper body. Roper was taken to an area medical center for treatment, but ultimately passed away as a result of her injuries approximately twenty minutes later, according to police.
Homicide detectives responded to the area to obtain surveillance video, as well as gather statements from witnesses. Detectives were able to locate surveillance video from the area that showed the attack on Roper, who was reportedly a member of the unhoused community in the area. Detectives soon identified Raymundo as the primary suspect.
Raymundo fled the scene immediately after the attack, but was apprehended nearby a short time later.
Investigators believe Raymundo and Roper were acquainted with one another, but the exact nature of their relationship is not clear. Likewise, the motive for the stabbing has yet to be determined. During an interview, Raymundo reportedly denied any involvement in the attack.
Raymundo was later booked at the Fresno County jail on suspicion of murder.
