Deadly Shootout at Adelanto Apartment Complex; Suspect Remains at Large

ADELANTO, CA – On Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at approximately 5:50 p.m., a lethal force encounter unfolded at an apartment complex in the 11300 block of Lee Avenue in Adelanto, leaving the community on edge. Deputies from the Victor Valley/Adelanto Station were responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call when they found themselves in the midst of a shootout at the location.
As the deputies arrived on the scene, they immediately alerted Sheriff’s Dispatch about the unfolding situation. The tense encounter escalated rapidly, resulting in a lethal exchange of gunfire. The suspect, described as an unknown Black male adult, managed to flee on foot from the location before law enforcement could apprehend him. Despite an extensive search, the suspect remained elusive, and his whereabouts remain unknown. Thankfully, no deputies were injured during the encounter, although it is uncertain if the suspect sustained any injuries.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division were promptly dispatched to the scene to take over the investigation. Their preliminary findings revealed that two victims had been struck by gunfire inside one of the apartments during the shootout. Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment of their non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation into the incident is currently ongoing, and authorities are leaving no stone unturned to identify and locate the elusive suspect.
