Suspect in Custody for Attempted Murder in front of Bus Passengers

OAKLAND — Warren J. Nathan, 70, (alias Edward L. Corley) is custody ineligible for release on bond. Nathan was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in front of AC Transit bus passengers during the early morning commute.

Witnesses told police that Nathan initiated a conversation with the victim, and then he suddenly began stabbing the victim. This horrific incident occurred on July 17. Nathan, a resident of Oakland, was taken into custody on the same day at 4:53 a.m., near 800 East 15th Street.

Nathan is housed at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail, pending a plea hearing on August 4. He faces 10 felony charges including attempted murder, use of a deadly weapon, and inflicting great bodily injury. His charges include enhancements, which if convicted would impose longer sentences for imprisonment.

Nathan has been getting in trouble with the law since he was twice convicted as a juvenile. In 1983, he was arrested for voluntary manslaughter, but the charges against him were dismissed. He was convicted for an assault in 2021 involving caustic chemicals.

In November 2022, he was arrested for exhibiting a deadly weapon other than a firearm and making threats of violence. In May 2022, he was arrested for possession of a controlled substance involving a DUI incident.

Nathan also has prior arrests for forgery, grand theft, and sexual penetration by a foreign object. He has also been arrested many times for vandalism.
