SAN RAFAEL — Two men were placed under arrest following a street brawl in the Canal district that may be gang related. San Rafael PD responded July 28 at 10:40 p.m., as fists and beer bottles were flying.
A large group of persons were drinking beer during a street party, when an argument escalated to violence. As many as 14 persons were involved in a brawl that left two victims injured. One victim with a facial laceration was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. A second victim who was kicked in the face and stomach suffered only minor injuries.
Witnesses identified the two men arrested as the main aggressors. They also reported other brawling participants threw beer bottles at each other. Officers found broken bottles and cases of intact beer along a stretch of Windward Way.
Witnesses told police that some brawlers involved are members of a street gang. Two separate fights occurred before officers arrived on the scene. The San Rafael residents arrested are Joselito M. Vasquez, 33, and Selvin A. Vasquez, 21.
Both men were booked at Marin County Jail. The elder Vasquez was booked for felony assault with a deadly weapon with force likely produce great bodily injury. The second man was booked for misdemeanor assault and battery.
Officers recovered an empty knife sheath at the scene, which one suspect allegedly used to strike a victim. Investigators are reviewing surveillance video to determine whether to arrest or charge more suspects.
