Suspect Charged for Murder of a Teenager outside Lake Merritt BART Station

OAKLAND — BART police have arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting a teenager outside Lake Merritt BART station. The victim was targeted outside by a lone gunman at a bus stop near the entrance to BART.
The young victim was gunned down on August 8th during the middle of the afternoon+-. Recorded video evidence indicates the victim was deliberately targeted. This tragedy happened downtown shortly after 2:30 p.m., near the intersection of Oak and 8th streets.
Surveillance video recordings were reviewed by investigators to determine the identity of the suspected gunman. The suspect was detained in the area nearby and arrested nearly four hours later at 6:10 p.m. He has been identified as 45-year-old Juan A. Martinez, a resident of Oakland.
Martinez is being held in custody without bond at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail, pending arraignment on August 16th. He is charged with murder and six more related felonies involving use of a firearm and making criminal threats. The suspect is charged with personally using a weapon to cause great bodily injury.
Lake Merritt BART station was closed for about 45 minutes, before regular train service resumed. Investigators remained on the scene for hours. The victim died at the scene, and a tarp covered the body on the plaza level outside the station.
