An Orange County teen has been taken into custody for allegedly displaying a ghost gun in public.
According to a press release by the Cypress Police Department, a school resource officer received information on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 26, that a teenage boy had displayed a handgun in a restaurant near Ball Road and Valley View Avenue earlier in the day.
The officer identified the teenager as a 16-year-old Cypress resident. The teen was no longer present at the scene. Cypress PD officers and detectives soon began searching for him.
The next morning, September 27, two traffic officers encountered the teen walking down the street, near where he’d allegedly been displaying the gun, and detained him without incident.
Officers learned that the teen had hidden the firearm at a family member’s residence in Anaheim. Detectives traveled to the residence and retrieved the gun, which was loaded and turned out to be a ghost gun, along with two magazines and ammunition.
“Ghost guns” are unregistered firearms lacking identifying serial numbers, often assembled from kits. They are commonly used in the commission of crimes, as their lack of serial numbers make them difficult to trace.
