A Butte County woman has been arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene of a reported domestic violence incident and getting into a single-vehicle accident, while intoxicated, with her young child in the vehicle.
According to a press release by the Oroville CHP, officers responded to a rollover collision on Grand Oak Drive just after 6 PM on October 2. The incident reportedly involved an injured juvenile passenger. Butte County Sheriff’s deputies were already on the scene when officers arrived due to a report of a possible domestic violence incident involving the driver, identified as Sara Jane Osborn, 31, of Oroville.
Police say that Osborn had left the scene of the alleged domestic violence incident with her 2-year-old child in her vehicle after the victim in that incident called 9-1-1. While driving, Osborn rolled her vehicle off the road. Deputies responded and discovered the overturned vehicle and identified Osborn as the driver.
During the attempt to detain her, Osborn allegedly became combative and physically assaulted one of the deputies. She was taken into custody soon thereafter.
According to the press release, Osborn had removed her child from the vehicle after the collision, and residents in the area provided assistance until Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Cal-Fire, and Butte EMS personnel arrived. The child, who was initially not breathing and unresponsive, was life-flighted to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment. Currently, the juvenile is reported to be in stable condition.
During the investigation, officers noted signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication in Osborn, who allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol and operating the vehicle involved in the collision. Osborn was later booked into the Butte County jail on suspicion of DUI causing injury, child endangerment, corporal injury to a spouse or intimate partner, and resisting an officer.
It was unclear at press time whether Osborn had retained an attorney.
