Mendocino County: Human Remains Found in Burning Vehicle, Suspicious Death Investigation Underway

Mendocino County authorities have opened a suspicious death investigation following the discovery of human remains in a burning vehicle.

Shortly before 10 AM on Tuesday, October 31, CALFIRE notified the Sheriff’s Office of a vehicle fire in the area of County Road 337L, near the dump in Covelo. Covelo Fire Department personnel had been in the process of extinguishing the fire when they reportedly noticed what appeared to be human remains inside the vehicle.

A deputy arrived on scene shortly thereafter and confirmed the presence of human remains, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Detectives, along with an arson investigator from the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority, responded to the scene to take over the investigation. The Sheriff’s Office stated that it will also seek assistance from forensic anthropology staff at California State University, Chico.
