OAKLAND— A homicide suspect with an outstanding warrant was arrested by the Oakland Police Department in Berkeley. The suspect James Wheeler, 42, of Oakland, has criminal convictions dating back to when he was a juvenile.
A fatal shooting occurred November 21 in East Oakland on the 6900 block of Bancroft Avenue. OPD officers found the victim Johnny Johnson shortly after 11:30 p.m. Johnson was sitting inside a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound when officers arrived.
Despite their efforts to save his life, paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Oakland investigators later identified Wheeler as the suspected murderer.
OPD apprehended Wheeler on November 24 at 1 p.m. He remains housed at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail. Charges were filed against the suspect on November 28. His charges include murder, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, among other allegations.
The suspect remains in custody, pending a hearing on December 12 to revoke his parole stemming from a prior conviction. Wheeler has prior convictions for second-degree robbery in 2004 and assault with a deadly weapon in 2001. He was sentenced to state prison. He also has convictions for crimes dating back to when he was a juvenile.
