Man in Custody for Fatal Stabbing of His Ex-Girlfriend’s Brother in East Oakland

OAKLAND— Adelto Sanchez-Medizabal, 57, of Oakland, is in custody for murder, ineligible for release on bond. Sanchez-Medizabal allegedly fatally stabbed a man in an East Oakland neighborhood on November 30th.
The victim Gerardo Abreau was attacked on the 2600 block of 74th Avenue. It was shortly before 6:45 p.m. when Oakland police were notified of a stabbing incident. Turns out the victim is the brother of the suspect’s ex-girlfriend. There were two witnesses.
Somehow, the victim was able to take himself to a nearby hospital. When he arrived hospital personnel provided medical treatment for him, but he ultimately died from his stabbing injuries.
Investigators learned that Sanchez-Medizabal was carrying a knife when he confronted his former girlfriend concerning money. A fight ensued between the suspect and the ex-girlfriend’s brother, who got stabbed.
The suspect fled from Oakland to Morgan Hill, where he was detained by Morgan Hill police on Cochrane Road. Oakland police picked up and arrested Sanchez-Medizabal on December 1st at 12:14 a.m. Sanchez-Medizabal, who is unemployed, was transported and booked into Alameda County Santa Rita Jail in Dublin at 7:22 a.m.
Subsequently, eight felony charges were filed on December 4th against Sanchez-Medizabal. His charges include murder, and use of a deadly weapon. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information can call the Oakland Police Department homicide section at 510-238-3821.
