A man was recently arrested in Shasta County for the alleged possession of fentanyl for sale.
According to a press release by the Sheriff’s Office, a vehicle heading north on Interstate 5 failed to stop at the Caltrans snow chain inspection site near Fawndale Road on the afternoon of Saturday, January 13. A CHP officer on duty in the area observed the driver of the vehicle not stopping at the inspection site and ignoring instructions from a Caltrans employee. The officer then conducted a traffic stop.
The driver of the vehicle was later identified as Osny Galeas, 18, of Oakland. Galeas had another person in the vehicle with him, and initially, both provided false names, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The officer found probable cause to search the vehicle, leading to the discovery of over four-and-a-half pounds of suspected fentanyl hidden inside. The Shasta Interagency Narcotics Task Force responded to the scene to assume the investigation in light of this discovery.
Narcotics detectives also determined that the passenger was under the age of 18. Galeas reportedly admitted during interviews to transporting the fentanyl from the Bay Area with the intent to distribute it in Oregon.
Galeas was arrested on suspicion of the possession and transportation of a controlled substance for sale, as well as child endangerment. The juvenile passenger was placed in temporary protective custody due to their age and later returned to Oakland.
Galeas remains in custody at the Shasta County jail on $500,000 bail.
