“On January 21, 2024, at approximately 1:53am, Citrus Heights Police responded to the report of a man who had been stabbed and was laying on the ground outside a business in the 6400 block of Antelope Road in Citrus Heights. Officers arrived within two minutes and located an unresponsive adult male laying on the ground outside of a closed business.
Officers immediately began life-saving medical aid for the man. Fire personnel arrived and continued life-saving measures but were unable to revive him due to his significant injuries. The identity of the victim is not being released at this time pending notification of his next of kin. Citrus Heights Police Detectives responded and began a homicide investigation. Through the course of their investigation, detectives learned the victim and suspect were both part of the unhoused community and were general aquaintences.
The suspect is identified as 35 year-old Steven Cardenas and detectives secured a warrant for his arrest for 187 PC – Murder. At approximately 7:40pm this evening (January 22, 2024), Citrus Heights Police, in cooperation with the Roseville Police Department, took Cardenas into custody for his warrant on the shared border between both cities. Additionally, Cardenas has a history of multiple contacts and arrests with Citrus Heights police during 2023.
