California Highway Patrol Opens Investigation of Officer-Involved Shooting in Lathrop

“LATHROP, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Valley Division Investigation Services Unit (ISU) is investigating an officer involved shooting, which occurred on January 27, 2024, on Interstate 5, in Lathrop, CA.

On January 27, 2024, at approximately 12:35 p.m., the Lathrop Police Department was in pursuit of a Nissan Sedan driven by a male suspect who was wanted for domestic violence. The suspect drove southbound on Interstate 5 from Roth Road and while fleeing police, the Nissan became disabled and the suspect pulled to the right shoulder, south of Lathrop Road. The suspect then exited the Nissan and fled on foot. At approximately 1237 hours, as the suspect attempted to carjack a vehicle on southbound Interstate 5, a Lathrop Police officer on scene shot at the suspect. The suspect was struck by the officer’s gunfire and was apprehended. The suspect was transported to the San Joaquin General Hospital and is expected to survive. No civilians or officers were injured in this incident.

Due to this incident and subsequent investigation, Interstate 5 southbound was closed and traffic has been significantly impacted. It is recommended motorists avoid the area if possible. The CHP Valley Division ISU and Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team are investigating the circumstances of this incident.
