“On January 23rd, 2024, at about 1323 hours, there was a report of a male, off campus, who was pointing a firearm at North Monterey County Middle School. A shelter in place was broadcast by school officials and the School Resources Officer, who was on-campus, arrived within seconds.
As deputies responded, the School Resources Officer gathered pertinent information and identified a 13-year-old juvenile male as the suspect. Within minutes, responding deputies located the 13-year-old juvenile male, a few blocks away, and a loaded handgun was recovered.
The 13-year-old juvenile male was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Juvenile Hall on numerous weapons charges, threats, and violation of juvenile probation.
The investigation is ongoing but at this time, it is believed the 13-year-old juvenile male acted alone and there is no ongoing threat to the school or any student. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, please contact Deputy Rodrigo Lopez at 831-755-3718.”
