FREMONT— Police are investigating who owns a large quantity of copper wire discovered
during a traffic stop near Farwell Drive. The driver and three passengers face multiple charges,
pending further investigation.
A search of the vehicle uncovered electric saws, bolt cutters, and more than 500 pounds of
copper wire. The copper was evidently stolen. Officers also recovered approximately four
ounces of suspected methamphetamine.
The driver Juan Jose Cazares-Alvarado, 33, of Livermore, was arrested on February 6 at 2:30
a.m. Cazares-Alvarado was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for sale and
receiving stolen property. He was booked also for possession of drug paraphernalia.
Charges were subsequently filed against Cazares-Alvarado for possession of a controlled
substance for sale. He has previous felony convictions resulting in incarceration at Alameda
County Santa Rita Jail. His two prior convictions were for carrying a loaded firearm, and felon in
possession of a firearm.
The other three occupants of the vehicle were placed under arrest for outstanding warrants
and drug-related offenses. Everyone denied that the suspected methamphetamine and the
copper wire belonged to them.
Investigators are trying to determine who owns the recovered copper wire. Anyone with
