In recent efforts to address the ongoing drug crisis in San Francisco, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) conducted two nighttime operations around UN Plaza, resulting in the arrest of 23 individuals. These operations are part of the city’s broader initiative to curb open-air drug markets, particularly in the mid-Market area. Chief Bill Scott emphasized the department’s commitment to this cause, highlighting the extensive hours and efforts by officers to enhance safety and order in the city.

In conjunction with these arrests, the SFPD collaborated with Public Works and the Department of Public Health to tackle illegal vending activities. Public Works teams were active during the operations, issuing notices, impounding goods, removing abandoned items, and providing verbal warnings to enforce regulations and maintain public spaces.

The operations, which took place on consecutive Wednesday and Friday nights, align with the city’s Drug Market Agency Coordination Center (DMACC) strategies, focusing on the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods. This shift to nighttime enforcement around UN Plaza follows progress made in other areas, such as 7th and Market streets, with plans to continue these operations regularly.

Since the initiation of the DMACC by Mayor London Breed in May 2023, a significant number of arrests have been made for drug-related offenses, alongside substantial narcotics seizures, including a notable amount of fentanyl. Mayor Breed stressed the need for ongoing commitment and collaboration across various levels of law enforcement to address nighttime drug activities effectively.

The coordinated approach extends beyond law enforcement, involving outreach and support services offered to individuals in need by city departments and efforts to maintain cleanliness and order by Public Works crews. The District Attorney’s Office has played a crucial role in prosecuting narcotics cases, with an increase in cases presented and filed, leading to numerous convictions or guilty pleas.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins reaffirmed the commitment to combating the city’s drug issues, emphasizing the importance of adaptability in law enforcement strategies and the pursuit of justice to ensure community safety and improve living conditions in San Francisco’s neighborhoods.
