OAKLAND — BART police arrested an armed train passenger at Coliseum Station—the transfer station for the BART shuttle to Oakland International Airport. BART police confronted the man for fare evasion, but they encountered a more serious situation.

This man was carrying an unregistered loaded firearm. The police found a .45 caliber Glock pistol concealed inside his waistband. “A record check revealed the gun had been reported stolen,” BART police said in a prepared statement.

The passenger identified as Jdyn L. Yearger, 20, of Oakland, was arrested by BART officers February 25 at 5:40 p.m. Yearger is being housed at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail, pending further court proceedings.

Evidently, Yearger was carrying a plastic bag filled with cannabis buds, suspected of being for unauthorized sales. He had in his possession almost one pound of marijuana. He was also carrying a digital scale and $1,200 in cash.

He was booked for possession of marijuana for sale and taking the gun on the train. However, only two weapons-related felony charges were subsequently filed against him for –

  • Carrying a loaded unregistered firearm PC 25850(C)(6)

BART recently increased patrols at stations and aboard trains, primarily in underground stations. High visibility patrols are conducted to deter criminals and potential terrorism and respond to suspicious activity. Passengers with weapons, outstanding warrants, and illicit drugs oftentimes attract attention to themselves by evading transit fares.
