Two Arrested after Allegedly Discarding Bag Containing Drugs, Scales

Two people were recently arrested on narcotics charges after reportedly being caught speeding by a Merced County sergeant.
According to a press release by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office, a sergeant on patrol in the area of Highway 59 and Mission Avenue observed a vehicle traveling at a high speed on the morning of Monday, February 26. The sergeant followed the vehicle as it pulled into a driveway along Highway 59, at which point the occupants allegedly threw a bag from the car.
The sergeant detained both occupants, identified as Robert McKnight, 45, and Dennis Popejoy, 52.
Authorities also recovered the discarded bag and discovered “various narcotics” inside, which were later determined to be 44 grams of cannabis, 180 grams of methamphetamine, seven Hydrocodone pills, and two scales, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Both McKnight and Popejoy were ultimately arrested on narcotics charges.
