SAN LEANDRO —A four-year-old boy sustained non-life-threatening gunshot injuries at home during the middle of the afternoon. The alleged shooter Adam A. Johnson, a 33-year-old resident of Oakland, is in custody at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail.
The shooting occurred on February 28, shortly after 2 p.m. The boy was shot at a multi-family housing residence on West Juana Street in San Leandro. Responding officers and detectives found the boy suffering from a leg wound. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital for medical treatment.
Video camera surveillance and other evidence led investigators to identify Johnson as the suspect. Johnson was arrested on February 29 at 9:24 a.m. He is being held in custody ineligible for release on bond, pending further court proceedings.
Johnson allegedly stood in a shared driveway with a handgun and fired five shots in rapid succession at one unit. Next, he allegedly fired one shot at an adjacent unit, and the boy was struck. Investigators subsequently identified the intended victim who was inside the residence but not injured.
San Leandro PD said in a prepared statement. “Investigators believe Johnson arrived at the target residence intending to recover a vehicle he had reported stolen.”
Multiple charges were filed on March 4 against Johnson, including attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He has prior convictions for receiving a stolen motor vehicle, carrying a concealed firearm, and second-degree robbery.
