Man with Gang Affiliations Arrested for Allegedly Pointing Assault Rifle at Woman

On Saturday March 2nd, Corning Police responded to a 911 call reporting an incident involving a male suspect allegedly brandishing an assault-style rifle at a woman inside her vehicle. Upon receipt of the call, officers promptly initiated their response protocols.
While en route to the reported location, law enforcement officers spotted a vehicle matching the description provided by the caller. Subsequently, officers conducted an investigative traffic stop at the intersection of Houghton and Yolo Street in Corning. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers observed firearm in the back seat and thus proceeded with a felony traffic stop procedure.
The driver, identified as Manuel Zavala Cuevas, was taken into custody without resistance. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a semi-automatic shotgun and a loaded magazine containing five birdshot shotgun ammunition shells.
Further investigation revealed that the shotgun recovered from the vehicle was among the 45 firearms previously reported stolen from Nye County, NV. Additionally, records indicated that Manuel Zavala Cuevas is a convicted felon, legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. Authorities also noted Manuel’s known affiliations with the Nortenos gang.
Zavala Cuevas was promptly arrested and subsequently booked into the Tehama County Jail on charges related to the possession of stolen firearms and ammunition, as well as for being a convicted felon in possession of firearms. The arrest was carried out without any significant incident.
Law enforcement authorities underscored the recovery of the stolen firearm as a significant outcome of the operation.
