On the evening of March 1, 2024, San Diego Police were alerted to a shooting incident in the Grantville neighborhood, specifically within the 4500 block of Alvarado Canyon Road. Responding officers, arriving from the Eastern Division, discovered two men with gunshot wounds in an apartment complex stairwell. The victims were promptly transported to local hospitals by paramedics for medical attention.
The individuals injured in the incident have been identified as Joseph Taylor, a 31-year-old San Diego resident, and Lavion Estridge, a 24-year-old believed to be working as a security guard at the apartment complex. Despite Taylor’s residency in San Diego, he did not live at the complex where the shooting occurred.
Homicide detectives from the San Diego Police Department took over the investigation, which initially suggests that an altercation erupted among a group of individuals near the complex’s pool area, leading to gunfire involving at least three people. The gathering’s purpose and the specifics of the altercation are still under review, with further analysis of physical evidence needed to confirm initial findings. The incident is suspected to be gang-related.
In the course of their investigation, detectives identified Charles Burke, a 31-year-old man, as a suspect. Burke was apprehended on March 5, 2024, without incident at a gas station on Rancho Bernardo Road and has been charged with murder. He is currently held in County Jail.
The investigation into this double homicide remains active, with authorities continuing to compile evidence and information. The San Diego Police Department urges anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward and contact the Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers. This appeal highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to understand the full scope of events leading to this violent episode and to ensure accountability for those involved.
