A Chico man has been arraigned in court for allegedly breaking into two homes and attacking a resident, the Butte County District Attorney’s Office announced in a press release.

Raphael Santa Evans, 39, of Chico was arraigned in Butte County Superior Court on charges of attempted murder with great bodily injury and personal use of a deadly weapon, as well as residential burglary. The charges stemmed from two incidents in which Evans allegedly broke into two homes and stabbed a resident of one home with a stolen pair of scissors.

On February 24, police responded to a call regarding a possible intruder at a duplex on Fair Oaks Circle. At the scene, officers reportedly found both doors of the duplex open. Evans soon emerged from one of them, soaked in blood and water, and allegedly brandished a phone as if it were a weapon. Officers detained him without incident.

A second 9-1-1 call then came from the other residence, where officers discovered the resident gravely wounded in the bathroom. Evans had allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times with a pair of scissors, then beaten the victim with the lid of the toilet tank.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to recover, the District Attorney’s Office said.

Evans later had to be hospitalized himself; after being booked into jail, he reportedly smashed his head into an emergency intercom terminal in his cell, requiring multiple sutures.
