“In reference to the murder-suicide that occurred on March 16, 2024, at 1290 Northgate Drive, family members have been notified and we are now releasing the names of the people involved. As stated earlier, Diaz and Rohm had been in a previous relationship.
Victim: Esther Diaz , 34
Victim: Ryan Newsome, 21-hospitalized in stable condition
Suspect: Joel Rohm, 36

Date: Saturday March 16, 2024
On Saturday March 16, 2024, at approximately 0156 hrs., officers from the Yuba City Police Department responded to the area of Northgate Drive and East Onstott Road reference shots fired. Once officers arrived on scene, they responded to the apartment complex located at 1290 Northgate Drive where officers located a deceased female and a male with multiple gunshot wounds in an apartment. A deceased male was also located in a vehicle nearby. Detectives from the Yuba City Police Department and the Department of Justice responded to that location and are currently investigating the incident. The exact nature of what occurred is still under investigation.
Detectives have learned the deceased suspect male and female victim were in a previous dating relationship. When the deceased male and female were found by officers, the male was deceased from what is believed to be a self-inflicted single gunshot wound. The preliminary investigation indicates that his death was a suicide. The female’s injuries are undetermined at this time and will be confirmed later. Her death is being investigated as a homicide with in what appears to be a tragic case of domestic violence, not a random act of violence and there are no threats to the public.
The suspect and victims in this case have been identified, but their names are being withheld pending additional family notifications. The male suspect is described as a 36-year-old male. The victims are described as a 34-year-old female and a 21-year-old male.
No further information on this case is currently being released.”
