MARIN CITY — Two loaded firearms and illicit drugs were recovered from two persons arrested at Gateway Shopping Center. A driver in the parking lot tossed the weapons from a vehicle when Marin County Sheriff’s Office deputies attempted a traffic stop.
The incident happened March 18. Target store security reported a woman acting suspiciously inside the store. Meanwhile, a man associated with her stayed inside a parked car. Deputies were dispatched to the shopping center at 6:34 p.m.
The duo moved on to the Ross Dress for Less store before deputies arrived. Again, the male driver stayed inside the car, while the woman went inside the store. The driver disobeyed police attempting to contact him and drove behind Ross.
More deputies arrived and the driver was detained in the parking lot. Surveillance video shows him throwing two firearms into bushes, as he attempted to flee. Juan Martinez, 38, of Antioch was arrested shortly afterward.
Martinez was booked for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was also booked for possession of methamphetamine and transportation/sale of a controlled substance, and drug paraphernalia. Incidentally, Martinez was previously arrested for vehicle thefts and drug possession.
His companion Lucy Lu Tompkin, 24, of San Rafael, remains in custody ineligible for release on bond. Tompkin was arrested inside Ross for outstanding warrants from Placer and San Mateo counties. She was also booked for possession of fentanyl, receiving stolen property, and vehicle theft.
