“On Sunday, March 24th, just after 9 p.m. the Palm Springs Police Department responded to reports of a domestic disturbance, on the 500 block of Tiki Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 68-year-old man, outside the residence with apparent stab wounds, who later succumbed to his injuries, after being transported to a local hospital.
Eyewitnesses, including a vigilant neighbor, reported hearing an altercation and observing the suspect fleeing from the premises. Based on this information, PSPD officers, in collaboration with Riverside Sheriff’s Office (RSO) Star 9, combed the vicinity for the suspect. After an intensive search lasting an hour and forty-five minutes, the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Evan Steele, was located and surrendered without incident. Steele was subsequently taken into custody by law enforcement authorities. Based on the preliminary investigation, Steele had recently been in a relationship with the victim and acted alone. There are no additional outstanding suspects, and no further threat to the community.
Evan Steele faces charges under California Penal Code 187(A) 1200 1, for First-Degree Murder.
This is the first murder in the City of Palm Springs, in 17 months. As the legal process progresses, PSPD remains committed to ensuring justice for the victim and his family.
